I am on my way to Peru for an incredible missions trip and the irony sets in. I am reading “Rising Strong” by Brene Brown and the subtitle of her book is “How the ability to RESET transforms the way we live, love, parent and lead”. I am in the middle of my reset; striving to write a daring new ending to my life story while visiting a developing country to serve sweet children in need. I guess I envisioned my reset on a tropical island, resting from a long journey through a deep valley; but God works in mysterious ways and I could not be happier to be living in His economy and not my own.
One of my favorite quotes from Brene’s book is the following: “The irony is that we attempt to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or more acceptable, but our wholeness – even our wholeheartedness – actually depends on the integration of all of our experiences, including the falls”. She inspires me to own my whole story and let all the pieces, even the ugly ones and the ones that hurt the most, be fused into my reset into a healthy, joyful life. In order to do this fully, I have to let go, say adios to fear and get out of my own way.
This past Ash Wednesday, I decided to give up my ego for lent. I was not raised in the Catholic church; however, I have always been inspired by the tradition of giving up something for an extended period of time in preparation for the Easter celebration and a remembrance of what Christ gave up for me. It is time to put my ego, entitlements, pains from the past and judgements to rest. It is time to reset! Are you with me?!
