This week it happened, and I know you will understand. Someone said something that lit a fire inside of me and not in an uplifting way. It became a bit obsessive as I thought, “did she really mean to say it that way?”. Then you start asking those close to you, “if someone said ‘this’ to you, would you be upset?”. It begins eating at you, taking up your mental energy and space, causing the anxiety within you to grow and taking the air out of each room you enter. Let me tell you, I spend extra time in prayer when these situations pay me a visit. If I am being honest, I was a bit frustrated with God this time. It seemed the more I prayed, the more it failed to help – the stress stayed, the continued sucking of mental space grew and I could not figure out why, when I was doing something good (praying) and trying to avoid the negative (talking too much about it), nothing was changing.
I am not trying to be mystical, but in the moment of expressing my frustration to God for not helping me while praying, I felt the nudge to sing. I was in the car listening to K-LOVE and the answer to my prayer was to sing – out loud – really loud. Let me tell you, it worked. It was a complete surrender of my obsession, and the singing shifted my focus. I had to get the attention off of me and on to God. Maybe my friend had a bad day and did not mean to say what she said. Maybe she had no clue it would hurt my feelings. Maybe it had nothing to do with me at all and was a reflection of hurt in her life. I will never know because in that moment I had to completely let it go and just sing.
My hope in sharing this is to inspire you to give singing a try when life gets weird, when the words of a friend cut deep, or when you may be feeling blue. The song on the radio that day was Lauren Daigle’s “You Say”. It’s a great one to sing when you are in need of love and value from God. If you enjoy something more upbeat, give “Reason” by Unspoken a listen. Either way, I hope you are able to feel your beautiful worth even during times of small defeats.
