My “to-do” list has changed completely these past few months. Some days, I admit to adding in “extras” to make the day feel fuller. This past week I have battled the flu (amen it is not COVID – I tested negative, and let me tell you the testing is not fun) and found, in all honesty, I really do not have a lot to get done these days. The usual does not seem as pressing as it used to and there really is not a lot of joy in checking off a list during quarantine. But God (I love those two words) put an idea in my head today that has inspired me and I hope it inspires all you box-checkers too.
It is time to change the to-do list. Time to stop leaving a bit of margin for the giving in our lives, and time to start living fully in the margin. My margin in the past would involve quickly praying for others, hoping to help someone in need, giving something away – it was all too passive and not main stage; all the “when the time is right” – which really means, when the time is easy (or convenient). My new to-do list is no longer set up in a 1-10, check the box format; but in a more life and love-giving format:
- Love – Pray for those I love.
- Joy – Do something that brings me/others joy.
- Peace – Let go of something that is causing me worry/stress.
- Patience – Give someone the benefit of the doubt.
- Kindness – Do something for someone else.
- Gentleness – Stop for a moment to chat with someone who needs my time.
- Self-Control – forgive someone/something today.
If I can check off these boxes each day, then I think it will be undoubtably more fulfilling then cleaning the house and doing laundry. We can leave that in the margin of “when the timing is convenient”. I am so excited for this new list that I created and ordered the checklist to remind myself of what is truly important – loving others well.
