Do you overthink everything?! It seems I do so often – too often. I wrestled over the title of this post; thinking it should be “Autumn” with the joy of Monday being the official start of a new season. A wonderful friend and I discussed this topic the other day and while she was talking, I felt clarity on making difficult decisions. It boils down to this question: What is your best yes?
Lysa TerKeurst wrote a fabulous book on this very topic. I read it years ago and while it has stuck with me a little, it is unfortunately like important verses – I forget and then when I’m reminded of them, experience a fresh “a-ha” moment. (I think God has special nickname for me – Dory). One of my favorite quotes from the book is, “We must not confuse the command to love with the disease to please.” Here’s the deal – there will be times when we have to make a decision between two good choices. Host an event to benefit a non-profit or make extra time for family. Organize a group social for your church or work on developing your business.
I am learning the beauty of only saying yes to that which really tugs on my heart strings; what I truly feel is designed for me. When I say no, the event will still take place, funds will be raised and it may give a quiet person the chance to shine (without helium hands always blocking her!). We cannot be everything to everyone; that is God’s job. You and I will find our best yes when we take the time to step back, pray and see with fresh eyes what is best for each of us.
